Remove
all background noise. The more background noise you have, the less your
speech will stand out.
Speak
clearly and about 30% louder than you would when talking to someone. This
will provide additional volume that can be adjusted by the listener. Better
to be too loud than too quiet.
Use
inflection. Try not to sound like a robot. Add emotion to your speech to
change the meaning. If you want to show excitement, speed up your speech.
Want to convey that something is very important?
Speak
a little more slowly and perhaps a little more loudly than normal.
IMPORTANT:
Please do not Skype to record your audio book to your child. Best results
come from standard phone lines.
For
a consistent level of recording, it is best to use a landline when recording.
With cordless phones, try not to stray too far from the main base and make
sure your phone is not low on battery.
Do
not record you book on your cell phone. They produce too much static. If
you have to use one, use a noise-canceling headset. These headsets are available
everywhere phones are sold and will significantly increase the quality of
the audio as they are designed with that function in mind. If using a headset,
test your voice level to record at the proper volume.
If
your phone has adjustable volume controls make sure these are also set properly.
